5 Steps You Can Take to Help Protect Your Savings
The number of Americans impacted by financial fraud has increased every year since 2014. Security experts predict the number will continue to grow. Although financial institutions go to great lengths to ensure your accounts are safe and secure, using caution is also critical both online and off. We recommend the following steps to help you protect your hard-earned savings:
Don’t share your secrets. Don’t provide your Social Security number or account information to anyone who contacts you online, or over the phone. Financial institutions will not ask for your information online, and unless you have originated the call, you should not provide that information by phone. Protect your PINs and passwords and do not share them with anyone. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters for your passwords and change them periodically. Do not reveal sensitive or personal information on social networking sites. In many cases, this can also include publicizing your date of birth. Facebook birthday greetings are great, but it’s not worth having your personal information stolen.
- Enroll in Online Banking and Online Statements. Having paper statements sent in the mail invites the possibility of them being stolen right out of your mailbox, off a desk, or out of the trash. If you do get paper statements, know when they should arrive, and contact your financial institution if you don’t receive them as expected. Be sure to shred your statements before discarding them.
- Check your accounts regularly. Keeping an eye on your accounts will help you know when something is wrong. It is important to monitor transactions to ensure purchases and withdrawals listed are ones you authorized. If a transaction on your account was not authorized by you, contact your financial institution immediately.
- Set up account alerts. Even if you are vigilant about monitoring your accounts, it’s a good idea to go through your financial institution and set up text and email alerts through online banking to notify you about specific account activity. For example, you may want to set up an alert for anytime more than $200 is spent from your account. This can help alert you to unauthorized activity as soon as possible.
- Make sure your contact information is updated. Make sure your financial institution has your correct phone number and email address in case they need to contact you about suspicious activity. If you are contacted by a financial institution about potential fraud on your account, you can call your institution directly by using the phone number on the back of your credit card, or reaching out to your bank by contacting them through their fraud information, or customer service phone number(s).
By following these simple steps, you can help protect your accounts from being compromised by thieves. If your accounts do become compromised, you can help minimize the impact by spotting suspicious activity early, and notifying your financial institution as a soon as possible.
