Third Federal Recognizes Older Americans Month

In recognition of Older Americans Month in May, Third Federal is providing the following tips to help older Americans protect themselves from financial exploitation:

  • Never provide information, including your Social Security Number, account numbers, or other financial information to anyone who contacts you over the phone or through email.
  • Shred financial statements and preapproved credit card offers instead of discarding them in the trash.
  • Lock up your checkbook, account statements and other sensitive information when others will be in your home.
  • Pay with checks and credit cards instead of cash to keep a paper trail.
  • Avoid writing blank checks.
  • Enroll in online banking and opt for online statements and automated bill payment services when available.
  • Never rush into a financial decision. Ask for details in writing and get a second opinion before signing any documents.
  • Get to know your banker and have relationships with the people who handle your finances. They can look out for suspicious activity related to your accounts.
  • Check references and credentials before hiring anyone. Don’t allow workers to have access to information about your finances.
  • Never let someone who contacts you over the phone have remote access to your computer. Companies will not call you to notify you of a computer problem. Bring your computer to a local reputable business if you need help.
  • Do not send money to someone you do not personally know and trust. Never wire money to anyone who contacts you over the phone or online.
  • Check your credit report at least once year to ensure no new accounts or credit cards have been opened by criminals in your name. To receive a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website at, or call 1-877-322-8228..

Thank you for being a Third Federal customer.
