Beware of QR Code Scams

QR codes make everyday tasks faster - like pulling up menus, paying for parking, or accessing websites. But as QR code use increases, so do scams designed to trick users into visiting malicious sites or sharing personal information.

Common QR Code Scam Examples

• Surprise Package Scam: Victims receive an unexpected package containing only a QR code with a message like “Scan to claim your gift!” Scanning may expose your device and personal data.Messages pretending to be from banks, delivery services, or companies you trust, asking you to “verify” information, or click a link.
• Parking Meter Scam: Fraudsters place fake QR code stickers over real ones, directing you to enter payment info on a fraudulent site.

Signs a QR Code May Be Fraudulent

• Misspellings or odd grammar in the link or accompanying text
• Shortened or suspicious looking URLs
• QR codes from unknown or unexpected senders
• Blurry, altered, or inconsistent logos
• Stickers placed over existing QR codes
• Urgent demands or pressure to scan
• Overseas investment or cryptocurrency requests

How to Keep Yourself Safe

• When possible, type the website address manually instead of scanning.
• If you scan a code and the site looks unusual, close it immediately - do not enter information.
• Use a credit card, not a debit card, when paying via QR code for extra protection.
• Verify QR codes sent by friends or family by calling or speaking with them directly - accounts can be hacked.
• Avoid codes that look tampered with, placed on top of others, or appear in suspicious locations.

By following these tips, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from scammers. Although no form of fraud protection is absolute, a combination of personal awareness and protective tools will make you as safe as possible.
